Original Post: Our 9th grade Biology teacher has asked my help with a research project. One thing she's trying to teach the students is that, when doing research, they need to do a review of the literature and then discuss what their experiment/project will do based on what's come before. Does any one have a great way to describe a literature review to this age group? Any examples would be wonderful. Responses: I'm looking forward to seeing what you find. My graduate level qualitative research class is the first time I've ever had to do this and I'm having problems knowing how deep to go with this and how to word it once I start writing that portion. Here are the links we got in class, http://www.utoronto.ca/writing/litrev.html http://library.ucsc.edu/ref/howto/literaturereview.html http://www.ecu.edu.au/ses/research/CALLR/WRITING/ *** Not visual example. I discussed that when I got my PhD I had to do a lit search to make sure I was the only person doing or had done this research. I tend to do it one-on-one with the student. Today, for example a student is research James Baldwin and his gayness - and we spent time discussing his topic and thesis that homosexuality is inbred. What I find very difficult is to get the students to narrow their thesis statements so they can do the research. One boy is doing "white mothers with black children" - I struggled to get him to define his terms - adopted children, naturally born children...etc. I don't think he got it yet. **** Here's a good example: clem.mscd.edu/~brioda/hps334/lit_review_example.html ____________ Thanks to all. I hope our kids can get this, since they'll need to in college. -- Laura Pearle Head Librarian Gladys Brooks Library Professional Children's School lpearle@gmail.com 21st Century Librarians: We read.
