One of the things that I've done with students who don't find anything (or very few) hits in a search is to get them to locate something (anything) that relates to their search--in this case, "social issues"--- and then when they find an article that seems to be interesting (but not quite where they want to go), to look at the bottom of the article for "additional resources" or "see also" references. There are usually related topics listed on subjects such as the ones discussed in the article that might lead them to those terms that fit their search. Most of the time my students find what they are looking for through this type of "stone turning" just because their idea of what the subject might be isn't the database terminology used. Once they figure out how to adjust their search, they usually can brainstorm a topic and start "turning stones" for better search terms used in the databases. ~Shonda Brisco Trinity Valley MS / US Librarian Fort Worth, TX sbrisco021@charter.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lindy Hutchison" <lhutchison@MAIL.SWEENY.ISD.ESC4.NET> To: <LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU> Sent: Tuesday, March 29, 2005 11:16 AM Subject: [LM_NET] TARGET: HS Searching for a search term Dear Knowledgeable Folks, We have a junior English class reading books and reporting on the social issues contained in them. We're ok on everything except _Fast Food Nation_. We've tried "immediate gratification," terms to do with patience, Generations X & Y, and "cultural ills." We're coming up with zip. Where have we gone wrong?
