Years ago I was talked into placing the barcode in the upper portion of the
back cover....easier for inventory, etc. I bought into it - and after we
converted I hated it. It covered up info that I often used for book talks,
etc.

When I converted my current library I decided to put the barcode on the book
pocket. My decision was based on the fact that we check books out more than
we do inventory. In fact, I haven't done inventory yet- in five years. I
also used the front for book pockets - just seems nicer than flipping the
book over.

I'm being asked by an administrator about the possibility of changing the
location of where our district places it barcodes on library books. Our
district uses Accelerated Reader and some of the faculty would like to
change the placement of the barcode from the front upper left hand portion
to another location. The concern is the barcode sometimes covers the title
of the book. They like to show the cover of the book before they read the
book to the class. My suggestion to the site librarian was to have the
teacher show the title page inside the book. Our district is considering
changing the barcode to:

   1. The back of the book in the upper right hand corner
   2. The front of the book down in the lower left hand corner (not on the
spine of the book)

Since our district has been automated since 1990 the barcodes have always
been placed on the front upper left hand portion of the book. What is your
thought on this??

Thanking everyone in advance for all your thoughts on this matter.
