I agree with you that where you put the barcode depends on what works
best for you in your media center.

If I were starting from scratch, I would use Allen's suggestions and
put the barcode on the book pocket and use date due cards when kids
checked out the books.  Unfortunately, I inherited two libraries that
have a practice of stamping the date due on a label placed on the
lower right hand section of the front cover of the book.  In my case,
the best place for the barcode is on the upper left hand corner of the
front cover, assuming that we won't block any text.  This works best
for me because you don't have to keep flipping the book around when
you check it in or out.

The other thing to consider if you're starting from scratch, is how
much vandalism your library has.  In one of my schools, the barcodes
are constantly being ripped off.  I suspect his wouldn't happen as
much if they were unobtrusively placed on the book pocket on the back
inside cover.
