I use Avery address labels to type call number,
author, title, barcode number, price and OCLC ID
number for each book - these go on the back of the
title page and above the date due slip (don't use
pockets anymore) -- so I have 2 places to look for
missing barcode numbers.

This works for me because I work in a small school -
250 students in grades 7-12 - so I don't get tons of
new items each year. Usually 10 or less per month,
with a big bunch at the end of the year / start of the
next (do big batch orders). It might not be a
workable solution if you get many more books per
month.
