I do an annual book banquet. We do a 3 course meal 3 reading themes.
30 minutes each course. We have 1 or 2 parents read aloud, we eat, and
materials are available for students to read alone or in pairs.

I am not at school right now to give you a list of books. I will send
that on later. But when I have parents read aloud, I try and get them
to pick the book. I say read your favorite book from when you were in
3rd grade. Of course there are always parents that need help.

Good authors for these grade levels are Robert Munsch (3rd), James
Stevenson, Chris Van Alsburg, Roald Dahl, and Allen Say.

Our PTO is having a family reading night. They are calling it a "Read-in
Picnic" since children will be bringing in comfy blankets and pillows
and will be listening to stories and doing other reading activities.
There will be a guest reader for one half hour and I have been asked to
select the titles for the guest reader. There will be two time slots:
one for grades K-2 and one for grades 3-5. I need the most help with
title suggestions for the 3-5 group. My ideas so far were to have the
reader read a very enticing first chapter of a book that will get them
all fired up and want to read more. A new title, one that the kids are
less likely to have read would work well. Then I thought I also have a
few funny poems, a short cheerleader type break (Rah-Rah for reading),
and then more stories or poems. 30 minutes is a long time for a guest
reader to read and keep the kids attention. Any suggestions would be
appreciated. I promise to publish a HIT and later let you know how thi!
 s turns out.

Has anyone had a similar activity at their school? If so, how did it go?
We are doing this in conjunction with our Spring Book Fair and will
also have a balloon artist and face painting outside the LMC. There is
a Ronald MacDonald Reading talk, a raffle, and reading rewards. Gulp!
What did I get myself into? HELP!
