T.G.B.F. - The Guys’ Book Fellowship (for a reading group) “Catch the Wave” Summer Reading List for Guys (summer reading list) Thrills, Chills and Peril: Book Suggestions for Boys (bibliography) Boys and reading is a real interest of mine, as well. Here are my best successes: 1. Booktalks and literature circles. I urge English teachers to allow non-fiction titles in their free-reading assignments because some boys (especially 10th-12th grades) prefer It's About the Bike, Friday Night Lights, Into Thin Air, Lionheart, The Pact, etc. My 8th-9th graders still like fiction: Ender's Game, Shattering Glass, Eragon, Narnia series, etc. I wish there were more fiction titles (for that age group) about war, snowmobiles and car racing. 2. Use other boys in the booktalks. One older boy, preferably a football player or class leader, to spend 5-10 minutes talking about a book will keep the title circulating for months. 3. Have a "Barnes & Noble" day. Set up an easel offering a free hot chocolate or tea for book browsers. Arranged display tables and counters with homemade posters such as 'Chick Lit,' 'Guys Read,' 'Bestsellers,' etc.. and make sure the books look newish and inviting. 4. Actively recruit book title suggestions from boys. They have suggested authors I didn't have, such as Anthony Horowitz, Michael Dahl and Charles DeLint.
