Again, thank you for all your responses.

Some asked for an explanation of "tertiary".  In Australia we have three
levels of formal education provision - primary (K-6 or 1_7 depending on the
state you are in); secondary (7-12) and then tertiary which is university
for degrees, all of which start at a basic four-year Bachelors.  Those
seeking to move into apprenticeships and so forth go to an Institute of
Technology (sometimes called a TAFE which means Technical and Further
Education)  I think a diploma is the highest award from one of these
institutions.  Given the drop-out rate from uni and our current skills
shortage, I hope a lot more of our students consider careers via TAFE!

Pre-schools are available for the 3-5 year olds but that availability
depends where you live.  Primary and secondary education (from 5 to age 15
or 16) is compulsory and is funded at the state level; tertiary is the
domain of the Federal Government and I wish the current Minister would
confine himself to that.  It is my belief that the man has too much power in
relation to his amount of knowledge about school-based education!
