Hi all,

I had many responses to my question about placement of short story
collections. Here
are the results, in a nutshell:

29 respondents keep a separate SC section
18 respondents interfile with fiction
2 respondents shelve collections in the 800s
5 respondents interfile story collections by one author, and separate
collections with
multiple authors

People were sharply divided on their preferences; some say that separating the
collection is easier for patrons, while others were adamant that interfiling
is easier. Some
schools offer classes where reading short stories is required, and the
librarians in these
schools prefer to have separate sections. Other people, however, said that
having a
separate section can be very frustrating for patrons who have to look multiple
places for a
book. Others pointed out that it all depends on the size of the story
collection--if it is very
small, there may be no need to separate it. Many people suggested that I add
content
notes to the catalog, including story titles and authors, to make the stories
accessible no
matter where they reside on the shelf. I think the best advice that I
received was to do
what is best for my students. Since I've had more requests for stories by
particular
authors than for story collections in general, I think I will interfile story
collections by one
author with the other fiction. As for the other story collections, they will
remain in a
separate section for now. I plan to add content notes to the catalog as I
work my way
through the collection.

Thanks for all the help!
