Thanks Paula B. for posting a hit on weeding, especially the 900's. I too recently did some serious weeding because I had an intern here to help. Last year a former school board member was nosing around in my back room the day of the school budget vote. (They set up refreshments there each year on that day.) He discovered three large old volumes rotting away. He chewed me out for leaving these valuable books in such poor condition. He wanted to take them. They are entitled Picturesque California and edited by John Muir. I checked on the bookfinder.com and they are valuable. My principal authorized me to take them to a local bookbinder for repair, which came to around $300. Now I have these books beautifully restored sitting here collecting dust again. Besides the satisfaction I will get when the old geezer shows up May 17 and I show them to him, I am wondering if this is a worthwhile expenditure. Like so many of you, I love old books and am loathe to discard them. However, as you point out, a high school library is not a rare books store or a research library. I wish there was a way to sell these books to someone who would like them and then turn around and use the money to purchase books students will use. Any ideas?
