As a former ALA Councilor-at-large, I am a read-only member of the Council listserv and read the portion of ALA President Carol Brey-Casiano's report of the Executive Council's recent meeting with a lot of interest. ALA is responding to the postition and program cuts we are facing all over the country. As I corresponded with Carol to get her permission to post this on LM_NET, I also told her about the Crisis Kit SLMS/NYLA has compiled with links to research, articles and advocacy steps for people faced with such cuts to use. Professional organizations can help! All are welcome to check it out at <http://www.nyla.org/slms> with the link at the words "Become an advocate for your library! Check out our NEW Crisis Toolkit!? I am particularly pleased to report that the board approved establishment of a Special Task Force on School Libraries, in response to growing evidence of a crisis in school library service in this country. The Task Force will be composed of school media specialists and other ALA members from a variety of backgrounds, and is charged to: * Provide an overall assessment of the current state of school library service, * Identify the most critical issues and trends affecting school libraries and school library media specialists today, * Evaluate various options for responding to threats to school library services, * Make recommendations regarding practical strategies to prevent further erosion of school library services and restore services where they have been reduced or eliminated, and * Report back to the Executive Board and ALA Council no later than January 2006. More information on the Task Force and its members, as they are appointed, will be forthcoming.
