This is one of the issues we are dealing with on the ALA/YALSA/PPYA "Books
that Don't Make You Blush" Committee. Nominations are closed for the June
conference - but will begin again after the conference...we need time to
catch up on all the titles we need to read.

For my school -- it is relatively easy to deal with the problem. I don't buy
the books that have cursing. I learned this early on - from the students-
who complain about any four letter words found in any titles. They told me
they don't want to see it....not the parents - which is interesting. Yes,
that does mean we don't have some of the popular titles. I will inter
library loan any, however, if a student requests them.

A student just did research on rap and hip hop poetry. I felt rather dirty
after reading several of the selections in the titles I found for him.

Subject: [LM_NET] swearing in books

I'm going to be a librarian at a middle school and was wondering how you
deal with foul language in fiction books. I'm talking about more than mild
cussing.

Thanks,
