What if students WANT to enlist in the military? Are there books in your
libraries that encourage those students who want to serve?

I'm with Shonda on this one. Many of us forget that for some kids in our
society, the military is the only way to a better future. Remember Jessica
Lynch from WV? She had enlisted right out of high school because there was
nothing for her in her small home town and a stint in the military would
help with a college education. Many kids in the inner cities are in the same
predicament.

A local magazine in NJ has an yearly ranking of high schools in the state. I
was chatting with our high school principal after the annual issue came out
a few years ago and she was objecting to the criteria for the rankings. High
on the list was the amount of kids graduating who attended a 4 year college.
She complained that no one gave schools credit for getting many kids through
high schools so they could get into the military. Not every kid is going off
to college after high school and for many the military is a step up. How
many of you really think that our all volunteer army would be able to
continue if it wasn't a step up for some kids?

Remember, it's not OUR library...it's everyone's library. Balance is
necessary, even if we don't necessarily agree with the ideals discussed in
these books.
