A student just came into the library and asked why there were little numbers and little letters next to some of the text in her copy of Republic by Plato. She also wanted to know the proper term for these markings. I told her that my best guess was that they were guide markers from the original text so that if you were reading discussions or criticism that you would easily be able to locate the page/paragraph that they were referencing (similar to the bible). Does anyone have a different explanation or know the proper terminology? Stephanie E.
