I put up a bulletin board covered with rows of service banners, one for each
former student who is or has been in the military (each banner labeled with
a name), and the words "Honoring Those Who Serve" and "Happy Veteran's Day".
It currently contains eleven blue star banners (and one gold star banner -
my daughter's). We added a small disclaimer at the bottom encouraging
people to let us know if we've omitted anyone's name.

I also hung a blue star banner in the office, with a list of students' names
attached, for the enjoyment of those who don't make it upstairs to the
library. For those who want to do the same, a blue star banner graphic can
be downloaded at http://www.legion.org/pdf/bluestartban_811.pdf To make one
into a gold star banner, you can carefully cut out the blue star with an
Xacto knife and then place yellow paper behind the opening. There may be a
place to download a gold star banner, too, but I couldn't find one (and I
hope none of you need one, anyway!)

God bless the troops and send us peace.

Subject: GEN: Veterans Day

Veterans Day is coming up. Here's a super website to help teachers k-12:
http://www.va.gov/kids/

Remember, Veterans Day is different than Memorial Day. This is a time
to thank and help those soldiers who have survived war and made it
home from putting their time in at war. It's also a good time to thank
soldiers currently at war. The VFW (Veterans of Foreign War) is a
great place to call if you'd like to find a Veteran that might come to
your school.

Have you thanked a soldier today? :)

Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor those who have died in
service to our country.
