For my Bound to Stay Bound books I've used baby wipes and Clorox wipes.
The Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work very well, but will take off ink so be
careful.
We have some students with severe allergies and I'm always afraid of
cross contamination. During flu season I have classes clean my
kindergarten and everybody books.

I use cheap (but alcohol-free) baby wipes. I keep them handy when I am
checking in books.
It's amazing to me how well they work...and how filthy the books get!!
