The orgiinal question: We would like to increase accessibility to resources by letting students use videos/DVDs in the library. All our videos were bought as curriculum support. Some were bought by departments. They are usually played throught a video distribution system. What are the copyright ramifications? Scenario 1: student missed class and needs to see a video that was shown Scenario 2: student is interested in astronomy and we have a DVD on that Scenario 3: student just want to watch a video The answer from LM_Net colleagues (not legal advice): Scenarios 1 and 2 would probably be all right if only the one student were viewing it. (We have a room off the library that can fit that requirement.) Scenario 3 could be a problem (Redd Horne decision http://www.law.cornell.edu/copyright/cases/749_F2d_154.htm), but students could check out the video to watch at home, assuming licensing requirements allow. (These are instructional videos and are used in school potentially daily, so we do not plan at-home use.) Thanks!
