Hi Kathy,

You are correct on all counts:

1. You may not transfer a work to another medium, e.g., film to video,
or video to computer disk except in cases of obsolete media - meaning the
VHS playing machine is obsolete not the fact that you can no longer buy the
work on VHS.

2. You may not make an archival copy of film, video or audio like you can
for software.

So, when the VHS player is no longer made, I can make copies of all my
VHS tapes to DVD's; and only then. In the meantime, we are purchasing dual 
VHS/DVD players. Hope this helps.

I may be mistaken, but I believe that it would be a violation of the
copyright law to transfer videos onto DVDs, especially if the videos are
still available on the market. It might be a good question to ask Carrie
Russell-you know, her column in the SLJ.



Also, I also agree with the posting that DVDs may not be as durable as
videos and that something new could be on the market sometime in the
near future!
