Well, many, many of you have boxed up your libraries for any number of reasons and lived to tell about it. I received lots of good advice, and thank you all for that! (My original question was about options for moving/protecting books during a ceiling and duct work construction project). There are a few different options-- . Box everything up and move it out of the library . Put the shelving units on trolleys and move them out of the library with the books intact . Cover the shelves securely with plastic and keep all the books in place . Box everything up, but get a library moving service to do the packing/unpacking Some of the concerns with boxing are making sure the boxes are sturdy enough, and not stacking them so high that the weight will collapse the bottom boxes, damaging the books. It's best to use small boxes designed for books and to put just one shelf in each box and label both the boxes and shelves carefully. Some people were successful with covering the shelving with heavy duty plastic, but others found that it either got ripped off by construction workers, or that dust still managed to seep in and coat everything. Whatever happens, I'll report back and let you know how it goes! One thing I am going to do is ask about the possibility of putting in new carpet when all this is done so we don't end up having to do this all again someday. (We could certainly use new carpet, but I doubt there's money for it...). Thank you all again for the great input! Shayne -- Ms. Shayne Russell Library Media Specialist Kenneth R.
