I have an interesting perspective on this question, because I actually quit
another career, went "in search of myself," and decided to become a school
librarian. I enjoyed a successful career in advertising and then in
publicity for a book publishing company, and my husband and I decided the
right thing for us when we had our first baby was for me to stay home with
our kids. We now have two wonderful sons (ages 6 and 4), and I have loved
and greatly profited from being with them full-time during their early
years.

About a year ago, however, I began looking ahead to going back into the
workforce and trying to decide whether to go back to the publishing company
or do freelance publicity on my own. I was not particularly excited about
either option, because as much as I loved my work, I never felt like I
served any particularly noble purpose in the big picture of life. When my
son started kindergarten last year, I signed up to volunteer in his school
library, and from the first day I worked there, I felt like I had come home.
I loved being around the kids and I loved the organizational aspects of the
library (OK, so I'm a bit Type-A). I have always had a passion for books,
and it felt so right to introduce young kids to the world of books and
information. So, I started grad school last January and will be incurring
great debt and working for an eternity to get my MLIS and teaching
certification (59 hours total--why did I even go to undergrad?). I am so
happy and excited, however, because I know I will be doing something I love
and something with a very noble purpose indeed.

You are all so lucky that you are already there! I enjoy reading all your
words of wisdom and experience and I am tucking it away for future use.

Subject: What do you want to be?

Good morning Netters,

I hope each one of ya'll had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I know I did ;)
One of my friends has quit his job in search of "himself". This sounds
crazy to me, for I can clearly see him and wonder what is this all about.
He asked me "If you did not teach, what would you do"? Well, brain surgeon
or psychiatrist (calling Dr. Nutt, hahaha) seems out of the question, but it
got me to think (something we shouldn't have to do until Monday!)what would
I do if I couldn't be in education. So, since we are all reasonably
intelligent people, what would you do instead of being in the media field?
Just curious....
