Hi, The computer teacher and I do a short unit with our second graders about volcanoes. She has the kids learn a drawing program, and has them label the parts of a volcano and color it in. I talk about non-fiction books and why we have non-fiction books. And how we have science books. And in the science books we have books about Earth. And things on the Earth like volcanoes. Then I show them the V encyclopedia - look! More information about Volcanoes! And I have a piece of lava. And a science fair model of a volcano that we can put baking soda and vinegar in. And Brainpop. Wow. We get SO excited about volcanoes - and their reading story, Luka's Quilt, is set in Hawaii, where there are - you guessed it - Volcanoes! BUT I used to use my World Book Encyclopedia CD-ROM with some cool videos of volcanoes exploding and my Grollier CD-ROM with some cool photos of the ash laying around looking like snow drifts. But they are for my Mac and we have just been given Dell laptops and I can't use my Mac CD's anymore. Until I can buy another CD encyclopedia and get it loaded I am hoping YOU can suggest a source for some real photos and videos of volcanoes. I'd like to take these and make a short powerpoint show that I can talk my way thru with the kids. Or perhaps you can share what you show the kids? Thanks!
