One of our U.S. History teachers does mini research projects with his
kids. He forces them to use an encyclopedic source, a print source and
a web source. For the web source they are directed to historywiz.com
which searches through pre-selected quality history web sites. The ones
I have seen have been satisfactory to excellent. Today one of the
recommended sites was-- you guessed it-- a Wikipedia article.
The Wikipedia is a cool idea and popular articles do get fixed quickly
when someone posts incorrect information. The problem I have is my
students might be the unlucky ones who get the article before the fix is
made. World Book Online changes it's content frequently also, but new
information is edited and reviewed before publication. On World Book I
don't have to worry about my students getting the rough draft of an
article. When I think of wikis it reminds me of high school students
doing group projects and arguing over what should be included. It not
always the person who knows best that wins the argument. It is the most
insistent (most willing to fight, loudest, most convincing, etc.) who
gets his way.
