Kelly, the key was "TRAINED Para". I have library paras who are not trained. They
have NO knowledge of the middle school library titles other than ones they have
read in the past and the ones their children have read.

Yes, they can circulate materials.
Yes, they can help local the materials (call number).
Yes they can help with the selection of materials (notice HELP--I regularly ask
what is circulating on the days I am not at the school. And, I have given them a
section of a catalog that I am considering ordering and asking what their priorities
would be. BUT I am the one that makes the selection.)

BUT NO, they do not replace a librarian. Even when the administrators believe they
are giving the same service---circulating materials.

And as for their being ignorant or not, depends on who the media specialist is
saddled with. I am not given input as to which Educational Assisstant will be a
library aide. I am only asked "if I can work with this person as a library aide".
Remember, not all districts are as wonderful as yours. AND some of us inherit
aides that believe THEY are the librarian, and you are there just to confound their
ways.

JaKay--who was cut from elementary libarian and replaced with educational
assisstants who are doing a WONDERFUL job trying to LEARN all that I went to
college for training.
JaKay--who is looking at being a budget cut AGAIN this year. AND training my aides
in many of the decision making processes that I do daily/weekly/yearly.
JaKay--who will be LOOKING for a different school district this spring. ANYONE
want a hard working librarian?
