Not only is Kate diCamillo going to be in NCY at Bank Street (which is one
fabulous bookstore, and Lisa is one fabulous librarian in the school library
upstairs from it), but Kate's going to be at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in
Paramus TONIGHT at 7, and she's worried that no one is going to show up in the
rain. So if you are a Jersey Girl (or guy) and live nearby, show her us NJ folks
are tougher than thunderstorms and stop in to see her (tell her Judy F. sent
you!), and buy a copy or two of the hilarious new Mercy Watson to the Rescue,
about a pig who loves toast.

I had breakfast in NYC with Kate and her editor & a bunch of very fun
librarian folks this very morning at a very nice restaurant, Michael's, on W. 55th
St., and just got home. She was wonderful to hang out with--incredibly dry &
witty, but also shy & self-effacing. She told the story of speaking in a middle
school and telling the kids about the books she had written. She told them she
was 40, and one boy said, "She's 40 and that's ALL she's done?!"

At one point, the owner of the restaurant (well, I think he was the owner)
came over to see what the gals in the back room were hooting & hollering about,
and someone showed him Kate's Mercy Watson book. "Do you have any kids?" Kate
asked, and he said that he had a 3-year-old daughter. "You'll need a copy for
her," Kate said, and her editor, Kara La Reau (who also wrote the very cute
Rocko and Spanky Go to a Party) got him one. "Bacon on the house for you," he
told her, and I gasped. (I had ordered bacon with my pancakes, not thinking
about how inappropriate that was in regard to Mercy Watson.) So Kate took his book
and autographed it. "Read the inscription," she ordered, and he read it
aloud. She wrote: "To ___. Ask your daddy where bacon comes from."

Anyway, the new book is a total hoot. It will make a fabulous Reader's
Theater, and your early chapter book readers will eat up the soon-to-be series.
