Kim,
If you haven't seen them already, there are ideas for celebrating Teen
Read Week on the TRW web site at www.ala.org/teenread. Just click on
the link on the left called "Plan Your Event." One event that was a
success for me when I was in a high school library was a reading contest
during TRW. Each of the English classes competed to see who could read
the most pages during TRW. The ground rules were that only leisure
reading could count--not in school reading or homework. Students could
read books, magazines, etc. This was coordinated with the English
teachers. I gave each one a tally sheet, which they passed around to
their classess each day and the students recorded the # of pages they'd
read the day before. This got turned in to me, and on a bulletin board
outside the library I posted daily totals so students could see what
classes were in the lead. I got gift certificates donated from a local
bookstore, and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place classes got certificates. At
the start of the week, each student signed a pledge stating that they
understood the ground rules and would be honest in reporting their # of
pages read. The English teachers asked to be included, too, so they
also recorded their # of pages read on the daily tally sheets. This was
popular with both the teachers and students.
