Dear Folks: Thank you to all who responded. Here is a hit, as requested. Currently we have ruled out KidDiscoverer - we felt that it was too "young" and the websites they link to were not what we hoped for.... and will be looking at e-Library. We already have Infotrac, Grolier online and I do not want to overhwlem the students, as we post websites too. **************************************************** If you're talking about paid subscriptions, I would recommend SIRS Discoverer. Not only would it have really thorough coverage of many topics, but it gives various reading "difficulty" levels to the articles listed: general, easy, moderate and challenging. ******************************************** Nettrekker is great ********************************************* I like using Electric Library (E-Library) for middle schoolers because it is visually attractive to most students and easy to use. It isn't "baby-ish" (with graphics that seem too young for some of the older students) and it contains a great deal of information for all levels (5-college level). ---In fact, I used it for several graduate level research because it also contains scholarly materials from great journals. I also like it because it gives the Lexile reading levels-- for some of the stude nts / teachers, this makes a difference. I LOVE the book cart (for the teachers)---it allows teachers to select online articles to put in their specifi c folders within the database, so the students can access "Mrs. Smith's articles" without searching endlessly. The database also provides radio and television transcripts, photos, and a subject search area which allows students to locate information based upon a subject that they KNOW they need to research (but aren't quite capable of looking for the articles themselves.) If you contact the company (ProQuest) they will probably allow you to try the database free for a few weeks. http://www.proquestk12.com/trialsignup.shtml (No, I don't work for the company...but there are just some resources that I love! This is one of them!) ************************************************************** For current events, I recommend MiddleSearch which is an EBSCO product. My students really use our subscription and it's very user friendly.-- “I don’t want them to believe me, I just want them to think.” Marshall McLuhan ********************** Christine Hudak, Assistant Librarian LS St. Albans School for Boys Washington, DC 202.537.6466 tina_hudak@cathedral.org -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
