[LM_NET] TAR MID: Book similar to "October Sky"

Hi LM_NETters!

Our 8th grade LIT staff is looking for a class novel as companion 
book to "October Sky".  "October Sky" is too difficult for some of 
our students to read and for differentiation we are looking for a 
novel with similar themes of persistence, memoir, family 
relations-struggle, etc...but with a lower reading level.

A similar time period would be great but if the novel would relate to 
the space race or the technology revolution that would work.

Any suggestions? The reading specialist and myself are stumped.
