Hi, I just wanted you to know that I am a School Library Media Specialist that deals ONLY with AV and no books (dust, mold, torn pages, water, etc); no periodicals (same as above + scrunched in the bottom of lockers). I am the Director of a HS Library Media Center and have a Library Media Specialist that I serve with, plus a clerk and a secretary. Yeah, maybe I do have it good, but I worked to keep them for the last 28 years. And yeah, the three of them handle the library and I only do AV. And yeah, it works! Each of us is good at what we do and if we HAD to learn to do each other job we could do it. But this "venting" leaves a lot to be desired and tells the new library students something that just isn't right. Since when do department chairs have the Media(not AV) training that you have. Dropping this in their lap won't make you any friends there either. Perhaps what you should have done was an in-service to teach everyone what to do in common situations. We took over the textbook circulation for the school a number of years ago and shortly after that I went to the principal and said Textbooks or AV - can't do both and still run the library." All the AV was then passed off to each department. Six years later I still get panicked phone calls from teachers when their VCRs, DVDs, video cameras don't work or when the overhead has packed it in or when they need a CD player and can't find one. I, with a silent thank you to a very understanding principal, remind them that I am no longer responsible for AV and tell them to contact their department chair.
