LM_NET Archive

Would you believe that I weeded them from my shelves not 2 years ago?  They
were in terrible shape with repairs galore so I'm thinking that they were
well read.  I remember them fondly from my youth as well ( these predated the
orange covers as they were all colors with silhouette illustrations from the
late 30's to 40's)and was surprised to find them on the shelves.  They hadn't
been checked out in years and had traveled through several schools to find
their dusty homes on my shelves.  Practicality won out over sentimentality and
away they went.  I replaced them with the Photo Illustrated
Biographies Series. Not the same but my students do check them out.  The
weed/acquisition process helped boost my collection age.  Abigail
Adams: a Girl of Colonial Days will always hold a special place in my memories and
heart.

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] little orange biographies

This brings back the memory of my first experience working in a library. The school
didn't have a librarian but a classroom teacher in charge of keeping the
library in order. As sixth graders, my girlfriend and I volunteered to help out.
One day when the teacher-librarian left us alone during recess we had the
bright idea to make the shelves look neater by putting all of the orange
biographies together. After that he taught us the Dewey Decimal System.

I think the series you are looking for is the Bobbs-Merrill Childhood of Famous
Americans series. I have fond memories of those books -- I think I read every
one that we had -- though this write-up in Booklist is less than favorable:

The books are being re-released by Patria Press:
