Thanks to those who responded to my query: Is anyone familiar with a list of legitamate student essay writing contests (not poetry)? I have found quite a few lists of contests, but most are for adults, or seem to involve entry fees of more than $20. I received three responses. (Thank you Holly, Kate and Erin.) I have also included 13 individual sites that I found on my own that looked interesting to me, in case those help anyone else. I think the way to approach this is to keep your ears open locally and within your state to find the best legitimate opportunities for your area. Also publishers and national organizations such at the National Council of Teachers of English may have contests from time to time. 1. The Daughters of the American Revolution holds an annual essay contest. Your local chapter would be thrilled to have participants. www.dar.org has a list of chapters. 2. I just read in School Library Journal, Nov..of a Permabound contest using Joan Bauer's Rules of the Road and Best Foot Forward. Check that out. (Maggie note: here is the link - http://www.perma-bound.com/PermaBound) 3. PedagoNet-Learning Resources Database http://www.pedagonet.com (Maggie's note: I could not find any contests on this site, but I am including it because maybe someone else will have better luck with their searching.) These are individual contest sites I found on my own: http://www.writingconference.com/writing.htm http://mirror.afsa.org/essaycontest/ http://holocaust.hklaw.com/2006/index.asp http://www.newsweekeducation.com/myturn2006/index.php http://www.studentessaycontest.com/indexessay.html http://www.aynrand.org/site/PageServer?pagename=education_contests_tf http://www.penguinputnam.com/static/html/services-academic/essayhome.html http://members.rushmore.com/~grhsyouth/members.htm http://www.usip.org/ed/npec/topic.html http://www.acteonline.org/about/awards/CWMEC/index.cfm http://www.apee.org/essay/essaycontest.html http://www.pomegranatewords.com/contests.html http://www.dallasfed.org/educate/essay/index.html Ms. Maggie Knapp, Librarian Middle School/Upper School Library Trinity Valley School 7500 Dutch Branch Rd.
