Thank you so much to the folks who responded to my question about gas! I wanted to post a HIT just in case there was someone else out there who was curious. My saving grace is that I will probably never meet any of you face to face so although somewhat embarrassed about my lack of knowledge I am grateful! :) Sincerely, Patricia H. Gray HIT: I would have to say no to the cloud, heat, and smoke being a gas. A cloud is water vapor that has condensed, heat is energy, smoke is a colloid (particles suspended in a gas) The students may think that heat is a gas because they can see the convection currents in the air, same with smoke. A cloud is water vapor, and that's good enough for second grade. Heat is not a gas. Smoke isn't either, but close enough for second grade. I believe a cloud is moisture molecules, smoke contains fine particulate matter, and heat is energy in the way described. A cloud is water vapor, so it is a gas. Smoke is a gas with small particles of solid in it. Heat is not a gas, it is energy. Memory fails me on high school chemistry, but I'm thinking that clouds and smoke might be some sort of suspension - water droplets suspended in air for a cloud, and solid particles suspended in air for smoke. Heat would be a form of energy. Patricia H.
