I am a new elementary SLMS. In our library they have traditionally filed fiction books beginning with Mc as Mac. I want to file names beginning with M’, Mac, and Mc (as well as other letters for which this occurs) alphabetically exactly as they are spelled. I think this would be much easier for the kids to understand and the volunteers to shelve. However, I do want the students to learn to use any library so I want to maintain some consistency. Somehow I got through school without learning this! What do you do and are there ALA rules that govern this? Also, they do not file series by number, but by the title of the book, interspersed with other titles by the same author. What do you do in this case? Thanks so much!!
