Many great ideas from wonderful, sharing colleagues!

My query:
I am looking for a story featuring the themes of compassion and/or
consideration (as in "thoughtful and sympathetic regard") that would
be appropriate to read to a group of
3 to 5 year olds at a holiday program. We have a diverse cultural
student body and feel these qualities are emphasized in all religions
and do not want a story that features one denomination. Does
anything like this exist? It does not have to have a holiday theme.

The responses:

How about HOW KIND by Mary Murphy (Candlewick, 2002)? It's a simple
story, appropriate for this age level, about animals each doing good
turns for one another, and there's even a refrain of "How kind!" that
listeners can shout out. Great read aloud, nondenominational, and
appropriate message.

Here is my list of compassion books. They are not all the level you
wanted, but I've highlighted the ones I would recommend.
