Hi Amy - Well, if you have a true Sustained Silent Reading period during the day, the librarian must read as part of that process. I have seven SSR periods each week (so that each period of the day gets a chance once per week for SSR), which means I am modeling the concept of sitting quietly and reading without interruption for that many periods each week. It's been worth it to see how seriously the students have come to take these periods, and those who really need quiet time appreciate it (and depend on me to protect those periods). Of course, there is a trade-off. I don't take any prep periods, I'm open during lunch, and open after school until 4:00, 4:30, or 5:00 depending on outside obligations. So I guess the reading time is made up. Sad, though, that some librarians have to feel funny or guilty about being seen modeling good reading behavior in the library. That's too bad. I invite faculty and administration to come for the reading periods to help support the concept, and a couple have (but most hit the road the minute the bell rings, so they don't have time during the day to take a quiet period!). I haven't had anyone criticize or question those periods...in fact, the superintendent has been quite protective of them himself.
