Subject: [LM_NET] Exhibit for Banned Books Week available

I'm forwarding this again. The contact information was left off the
original post.

The Long Island Coalition Against Censorship is an association of 22
member
organizations (17 of which are public libraries and professional library
organizations - the Long Island School Media Association is a founding
member organization) which have joined together to combat censorship in
school and public libraries. Following is a description of our exhibit,
Censorship in Schools and Libraries.

In planning an exhibit for Banned Books week the last week in September
or
at another time of the year, you may wish to consider the 2005 edition
of
the exhibit, "Censorship in Schools and Libraries" available from the
Long
Island Coalition Against Censorship .The exhibit presents 30
illustrations
of censorship each one approximately 11" x 14" with accompanying text
that
is 11" x 14." The history of censorship in public schools and libraries
highlights incidents of censorship that have occurred in the United
States
during the last 150 years. Included are descriptions of the censorship
of
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, In the Night Kitchen, The Catcher in the
Rye, and the novels of Judy Blume and Robert Cormier. U.S. Supreme Court
decisions and lower court decisions are an integral part of the exhibit.

The new edition includes continuing efforts to censor the popular Harry
Potter's children's books (A few years ago, Harry Potter books were
burned
in Alamogordo, New Mexico), and renewed efforts in a number of states to
challenge the significance of evolution in science classes. Added to the
exhibit is the decision by the United States Supreme Court requiring
public
libraries receiving federal funding to install filters on all computers
connected to the Internet. In addition to the new cases, there is an
update
of cases that have occurred since 1990.

Quality copies of the exhibit have been reproduced which may be readily
presented on poster boards in libraries or classrooms and retained by
you
for future exhibits. If space is limited, we suggest rotating the panels
during the time the exhibit is on display. Excerpts from the exhibit are
on
our web site www.the-licac.org <http://www.the-licac.org/> . Click on
Exhibits, "Censorship in Schools and Libraries" and excerpts. The cost
of
the exhibit including mailing charges is $38.00 postpaid by check or
money
order to the Long Island Coalition Against Censorship, PO Box 296, Port
Washington, N.Y. 11050.

If you need additional information contact us <mailto:coalcen@juno.com>
coalcen@juno.com or call (516) 944-9799. Note: If you are interested in
ordering in time for Banned Books Week, please do so by Friday,
Sept.16th.
