Greetings, fellow LM_NETters, and welcome to a new school year! The SUNLINK Weed of the Month topic for September is "Volcanoes and Earthquakes." Earthquakes and volcanoes have been in the news recently with renewed interest due to the devastating tsunami resulting from the Indonesia earthquake in December 2004. Statistically, earthquakes and volcanoes have not increased over the years, but media coverage and public attention has been on the increase. Take advantage of this new interest and refresh your collection in this area. For information on criteria, a rationale, suggested titles to consider for weeding, and titles to consider for purchase, go to this section of the SUNLINK web site: http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu/weed/ A brief explanation of Weed of the Month for new LM_NET members: The SUNLINK Weed of the Month began in September 1997, as an effort to help provide Florida's School Library Media Specialists with guidelines and suggestions for weeding their collections a little at a time as well as adding quality materials. The project idea and specific suggestions came from media specialists around the world via LM_NET. A section of a school library media collection is identified each month during the school year as a weeding target. Please note: If you've used SUNLINK Weed of the Month in the past, you'll notice a new format we hope you'll like. Also a downloadable version of this month's weeding topic is available in PDF. Past weeding topics are archived; however, our website is under revision and not all topics are currently available. Stay tuned!
