1. Study with possible implementation at ECA some of the ideas I obtain from
the AASL conference (early October in Pittsburgh).

2. Re-design front entryway and the library computer area.

3. In order to further assist our students with research, develop at least
one pathfinder each for MS and HS for the following disciplines: social
studies, science, Spanish.

4. In conjunction with ECA’s technology coordinator, develop a multi-year
plan for ECA classrooms to be equipped with certain pieces of AV/Tech
equipment, such as a TV/VCR/DVD combo, an MMP, and a SmartBoard. We will
write a grant for this.

Ongoing:
· Evaluate the nonfiction collection 000s through 500s.
· Evaluate the reference collection (done annually).
· Evaluate the Teacher’s Collection and web links of curricular-related
sites.
· Learn at least the first names of all MS and HS students.
· Promote “free reading” to students, both through English teachers and
classes, and individually.
· Continue to work on improving students’ research skills, through group and
individual instruction, and by providing access to quality materials in both
print and online formats.

LIBRARY GOALS 2005 – 2006

1. 1. GOAL: To continue to improve student research skills through
integration with class research units.

VISION LINKS:
ÖLifelong learning skills, including a love of learning
ÖUniversity survival skills
ÖProblem-based learning
ÖReal-life problem solving
ÖHigher ethical standards

EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS STRATEGIES
Ø Ø Students display greater awareness and knowledge of the steps
involved in a research process. Ø Ø Students make use of a logical,
thoughtful process when carrying out research. Ø Ø Students choose
appropriate information sources and are increasingly able to evaluate their
value and usefulness for the particular project. Ø Ø Students are able
to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of their research, once
completed. Ø Ø Work closely with teachers and classes that are
involved with research projects at all levels. Ø Ø Provide ongoing
instruction in the research process, both with classes and individuals. Ø Ø
Provide ongoing instruction on critical evaluation skills. Ø Ø Provide
ongoing instruction about avoiding plagiarism and correct citation skills. Ø
Ø Develop at least one pathfinder per school level in social studies,
science, and Spanish.

1. 2. GOAL: To evaluate and promote the library’s professional
collections for faculty, both print and online websites included on the
library website.

VISION LINKS:
ÖLifelong learning skills, including a love of learning
ÖProblem-based learning
ÖDedicate appropriate resources
ÖHigher achievement in math, science, literacy, social science

EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS STRATEGIES
Ø Ø The Library’s Teacher Collection reflects print resources of value
to ECA faculty. Ø Ø The Library’s curriculum-related websites are of
value to ECA faculty. Ø Ø ECA faculty is more aware of the resources
available in the Teacher Collection and through the library website. Ø Ø
Positive feedback is received from faculty. Ø Ø Faculty suggests
resources to acquire for the Teacher Collection and websites to include on
the library website. Ø Ø The entire Teacher Collection will be
carefully evaluated by the Library Director, title by title, with input by
teachers if necessary. Ø Ø Updated titles will be placed on order when
deemed optimal. Ø Ø Newly identified curricular websites are added to
the library website; those determined of minimal value are deleted. Ø Ø
Librarians will increase ECA faculty’s knowledge of teacher collections
through in-services and individual contact.

3. GOAL: To continue to promote student reading.

VISION LINKS:
üLifelong learning skills, including a love of reading
üEmphasis on character development, behavior standards and accountability
for their development
üUniversity survival skills
üDedicate appropriate resources
üHigher achievement in math, science, literacy, social science

EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS STRATEGIES
Ø Ø Increased circulation. Ø Ø Increased awareness of the
value
and pleasure of reading among our student body. Ø Ø More conversation
among students and faculty about recommended books (a culture of readers). Ø
Ø Increased number of reviews, both in our online book review site and
on written cards. Ø Ø Encourage middle school and high school
English classes to provide for pleasure reading at least once a semester and
preferably once a quarter. Ø Ø Continue to develop our book
collections to provide excellent reading possibilities for our students. Ø Ø
Continue to encourage use of the online book review site and review cards. Ø
Ø Work with the high school book group. Ø Ø Provide book talks
to classes. Ø Ø Provide reader’s advisory to individuals at all
levels. Ø Ø Provide events that focus on the importance of reading,
such as Book Bites, TV Turn Off Week, visiting authors, book displays

4. GOAL: To re-design the library’s computer and entry areas.

VISION LINKS:
üInnovation
ü Dedicate appropriate resources
üECA as a model international school

EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS STRATEGIES
Ø Ø The library’s entryway space will be better utilized and more
welcoming with a different layout. Ø Ø Supervision of students working
at computers will be easier with a better configuration Ø Ø
Investigate others school libraries’ physical arrangements. Ø Ø Work
with design experts to determine possible layouts for the computer and entry
areas. Ø Ø Locate vendors and establish the funding and budget
necessary to accomplish plans.

Our school is still new - we're in our 6th year. There's been only one
librarian/media specialist, and that's been me since year two.

An important goal for me this year is to establish a trained backup for the
media specialist (me). Last year, I had one of the ladies from the office
give me a 30 minute lunch break. However, she used her time in the media
center to catch up on her newspaper or phonecalls. Since circulation is
quiet, there wasn't much activity that happened her way. This spring, one
of our substitute teachers (also a mom of one of our students) offered to
volunteer a bit. I gave her some training over the summer, and asked that
she be called to cover for me when I'm on leave.

My other goal is to establish the importance of our Infotrac database with
faculty and students. Since we're a private school, we don't have specific
entitlement to a Galileo password. While I stress the use of Galileo (using
the public library's password) when I can, I stress Infotrac more. We're
paying for it, and it's a good resource for 9 - 12 grades.
Sorry, I had a blonde moment on the first posting :)

Hope this helps,

 1. Label our Reading Counts books
2. Create new/better signage in the library
3. Redecorate with Harry Potter theme
4. Have at least one flexible day in the library schedule
5. Collaborate with teachers on research projects
6. Weed the fiction and easy sections

I have lots of goals for my library, but most of them will take far more
than a year. But those I really hope to accomplish this year:

1) create a Spanish section
2) repair or replace 6 non working computers (we have 8 - 6 of which are non
functional!)
3) establish a network of volunteers
4) WEED! Deeply and without mercy. (Although our school is not yet 30 years
old we have books, lots of them! from as early as the mid 1930's!)
5) Create a 5 year plan for other projects, renovations, and updates.
