I have been watching the news closely.....since I live in Houston we have had
a lot of suggestions on how to help. From what I am understanding right now
they are not taking donations at the Astrodome but through the American Red
Cross and the Salvation Army. I personally think the Houston City leaders and
those in charge at the Reliant Complex (-this is what they actually call the
Astrodome, Reliant Center and Reliant Arena) are doing a fantastic job--yes they
were and probably are still overwhelmed by the number of people and trying to
meet all their needs. Since they have the refugees in the three buildings and
they are full they are also supposed to open the George R Brown Convention
center to the refugees I think this morning.
There was a group last night talking about getting things for the kids....but
right now I think they are trying to reunite families and take care of
immediate needs. I will watch the news today and if they tell an organization that
is taking donations for toys and books for the children I will post it to the
list.
If I am not mistaken the Houston School District is planning on either
starting a school at the Reliant complex---all three of the buildings have meeting
rooms --the Center is actually for conventions. HISD has also talked of
opening several schools that were closed due to small enrollment and making schools
for the Louisiana children. And of course there are plans to bus them to the
nearest schools. On the news last night there was a touching story of a little
boy that came from Louisiana and is with family and he enrolled in school and
the kids were all happy to have him.
I think right now the best thing we can all do is donate to the Red Cross
and the Salvation Army.
