  Colleagues:

In middle school at least, the goofiest, most spontaneous ideas often
seem to work the best. I want to share this [cough] instant masterpiece
as a case in point. It's a powerpoint presentation (actually created
using the very excellent open-source program, Impress!) on citing
research sources using our library's simplified bibliography format. It
was part of a seventh grade research project I had to put together in a
hurry recently. When I found out the classroom teacher was willing to
let me do a full-blown bibliography lesson on the day before the library
research project was to begin, I fired up a pot of java and, the next
thing I knew, I had this presentation.

I used it with four classes the next day and--who woulda guessed it?--it
really sucked 'em in.

Find it at:

The presentation is not meant to be used on its own-- I actually talked
through the presentation informally with the classes and had
transparencies of our bibliography worksheet
http://www.howellschools.com/~hwmedia/content/Bibliographyworksheet.PDF
on the overhead, projected on a separate screen. We actually had fun. I
shamelessly lured children front and center using a big bag o'candy and
had them cite the four different information sources that Mr. Hand used
to research his paper on "Life on Mars," as the other kids followed
along, filling out their own bibliography worksheets. I had actual, 3
dimensional copies of each information source on hand, too.

It really worked pretty well. One regret, though: I've since realized
that a certain crudely animated series also has a character known as
"Mr. Hand"...I may have to change that...

Anyway, I thought I'd share this with you because--as you know if you've
ever tried to teach it-- bibliography involves a set of skills very
tough to impart to kids; maybe you'll find some ideas in this lesson
worth using.

More complete information about our bibliography format can be found at:
