I plan an entire week of activities for TV Turn-off. Monday is a Family
Literacy night where families have volunteered to read Esperanza Rising.
We give them a free book to share at home and we also have numerous cd
versions of the book available for families where there might be a
language or reading problem. They can listen to the book together.
Then they come to discuss the book, usually with a guest presenter. We
were hoping to get the governor's wife this year but instead it's a
discussion with our Principal. We also have family type games and a
craft project for after the discussion. Tuesday night is our Poetry
Slam. Students compete in three different rounds. The first round must
be an original poem. Only a certain number go on to level 2 and 3.
Levels 2 and 3 can be an original poem or can be from a favorite author.
Prizes are savings bonds 100.00, 75.00, 50.00 and everyone
participating gets a certificate for a free book at the book fair which
is also held this week. Wednesday we encourage them to participate in
an activity at home. Thursday night is a dodgeball tournament. Friday
night is a family swim night in our High School Pool. There is no cost
to participate as it is paid for by a recycling program we have in our
