Thanks to all who responded! Several asked for information about where I
purchased the graphic novel biographies. The publisher is Capstone Press,
www.capstonepress.com. The series is "Graphic Library" and they have both a
biography series and a history series. I will definitely look into
purchasing more titles next year.

Also, several asked that I publish a HIT. Here are the responses I
received, followed by my original message.

My collection is the most popular in the media center. A particular
favorite is the hobbit in graphic novel format. It is absolutely
beautiful! I have a graphc novel club. The kids love to meet and talk
about their favorites. But mostly, they like to draw! Last week I found a
person from a comic store that came in and did a presentation. The
interaction was great!

I highly recommend them as they are very motivational and reach an unusual
group of kids!

I have several series of graphic novels that are in the anime style. I
have not seen or heard of non-fiction novels until your email. Please
tell me where you found them and some information about them. Sounds
like a perfect way to get middle schoolers to read informative books!!

I have purchased several non-fiction graphic novels. They constitute
about 5% of my graphic novel collection * I have a large collection, I
think (about 300 titles). Many of my students go right to the GN section
(741.5) and slect books from there. I have been able to point a couple
of reluctant readers to other books after they have exhausted my GNs. I
think the graphic biographies can be used with special ed. students in
regular classes who need modifications, so they can do a biography
project, for example, along with the rest of the class. Once my
collection is large enough, I will recommend this to the teachers.

Please post a hit.

The Nov 2005 issue of SLJ discussed a study that showed how graphic novels
improve reading skills. You may want to read the article by Pam Berger
and Barbara Stripling.

>From my personal experience, the kids love them and have made requests for
more. I have them in fiction and non-fiction.

Hello, all! I recently purchased a few titles of graphic novels that are
biographies of prominent figures in American History. So far, the response
from students has been positive and they are being checked out. I am
finding more and more titles available in graphic novel format and am
considering purchasing more next year. My questions to you all are:

How do you feel about non-fiction titles in graphic novel format? Do you
have many in your library? Do you think they encourage reading with some of
the more reluctant readers? Any other thoughts or comments?

Thanks for your help!
