Dear LM_NET: I have struggled as all of us have with the overdue library book dilemma for many years. I instituted a stiff fine 3 years ago. The first year it helped. Students were worried or intimidated and paid their fines which generated a goodly amount for incidentals like decorations candy, prizes, etc. Now both the overdue and fine list have become such a chore. Students are so apathetic. They do not care if they have and overdue book. I had a half-price fine day and 15/200 students took advantage of it. I have been thinking of instituting a check out change for next school year and would like your opinion. Students could check out the first 1-3 items gratis. After that, if they want another item, they must show me that they have returned an item. Tit for Tat. No overdue lists or fines. What do you think? Thanks for your help.
