LM_NET Archive

Just recently I tried a musical chairs read around. I'm sure I got the idea
from someone here on LM_Net. I put a couple stacks of books on 4 different
tables; realistic fiction, mystery, historical fiction, and sci-fi/fantasy.
Students sitting at the 4 tables had 3 minutes to browse the books on their
table w/out talking. I told them they would be allowed to check out the
books if they found one they wanted. I had to tell them they would NOT be
expected to examine all of the books on their table within the 3 minutes but
that there would be questions at the end. (Just to encourage them to really
read the book jackets, etc.) When my timer went off, they re-stacked the
books and rotated clockwise to the next table. At the end of the read
around, we discussed the genre represented on each table and discussed what
our favorite genre is. Some students (6th grade) still don't have a favorite
so I encouraged them to try something they haven't tried before. Many books
were checked out from the tables and I had the pleasure of finding more to
replace them.

I'm doing poetry with my 5th grade this week. I can't wait to try the
musical chairs read-around with them the last week of April. Oh wait, I'll
be at the Texasl Library Assoc. Conference. I guess my assistant and
substitute will get to have all that fun!
