The 5th annual Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) will be held on Saturday, May
6, 2006, and your library can get in on the fun!

The goal of this day is to introduce as many people as possible to the
wonders of comic books and reading. Comics and graphic novels have
garnered much attention from educators for their viability as an
educational tool. Not only is Free Comic Book Day a fun experience for
youth and their parents, but it also provides youth with exciting
reading material. The consensus among most teachers who have used comics
in the classroom is that they motivate students who are reluctant to
read traditional books.

1,850 comic specialty shops throughout the country will be giving away
comic books on May 6, and many of them want to work with libraries to
expose library patrons to the joys of reading comic books. Given the
pending release of movies like X-Men: The Last Stand and Superman
Returns, comic book interest will be at a peak in May, and your patrons
will definitely take notice of your participation in FCBD!

How do you participate? It's easy: Like the hundreds of libraries that
have been a part of FCBD in the past, you simply team up with a local
comic book store to each other's mutual benefit. You'll get promotional
materials and free comics to give away on May 6th (while supplies last).
Subject matter ranges from kid-friendly to adult, covering everything
from high-flying super-hero adventure to intense slice of life to crime
noir to humor and more.
To find an interested participating store near you, e-mail Allan
Greenberg, Library Sales Manager for Diamond Book Distributors at
gallan@diamondbookdistributors no later than Thursday, April 20th.
