My original question was how to pronounce the name of the character "Ob" in Missing May by Cynthia Rylant. The replies were fairly evenly divided between ob rhyming with mob and rhyming with robe. Cindy Smith from Tennessee added, "We "hillbillies" would say it like "mob". The more common nickname would be "nob" like a door knob. The character on Evening Shade was nob." Another person remembered hearing it with the long o (robe) sound on the audio book. I found an excerpt of the audio read by Frances McDormand on this site: http://www.booksontape.com/bookdetail.cfm/YA240CX This version uses the short o (mob) pronunciation. We are planning to go with the short o pronunciation. Anne Oelke Library Media Specialist, pK-12 Cambria-Friesland School District 410 E.
