One of our teachers wrote a thank you note to Peg Kehret for the book Small Steps,
and the pleasure her students had as they used the book for a read aloud. Here is
the reply from Peg:

Dear *-,
Thanks for your letter. I'm slow to respond because I was in Washington, D.C., all
last week. I went to see the polio exhibit at the Smithsonian. There are six quotes
from my book on display, so it was quite a thrill for me. When you spend your life
writing books for children, you don't really expect your words to end up at the
Smithsonian! My daughter and her family went with me, and the curator gave us a
private tour. It was wonderful.
There will be a tenth anniversary edition of Small Steps published this Fall, with
many more photos, including one of Dr. Bevis as an intern. I have also added a
chapter on the history of polio and the effort to eradicate it.
Thank you for teaching your students about an important part of our nation's
history, and for showing them the importance of the vaccine.
Peg Kehret
