Subject: ELEM: Holocaust movie - 5th grade?

Fifth Grade teacher is trying to locate a movie abut the Holocaust to
present to her students during Holocaust remembrance Week. A students
wanted to bring in Devils Arithmetic, to show the class, but teacher
nixed it, as "too much" for our students. I suggested the Paper
Clips film. She would have loved it if "Number the Stars" was
available on video, but it is not.

Any thoughts?

Suzanne:

I agree that The Devil's Arithmetic would be too "heavy" for 5th grade. I
think that either "The Paper Clips" movie or possibly "The Diary of Anne
Frank." Fifth grade is still young to deal with the Holocaust. At my
synagogue students really don't learn about it until 7th grade and then
they watch "Schindlers List" which is a very powerful and emotional film,
but I wouldn't recommend that to a public school. Hope this helps.
