When doing inventory---I start as early as I can. It is 7 weeks to do end of the year, and I have started. I also recruit volunteers. I also recruit 8th graders who are able to follow details to help. I have a sign that I put on the inventoried shelf, and have the person who did that shelf sign it. This way if there becomes a pattern of problems, it is easier to find where they worked and go back and re-inventory. Already have a talk with your principal(s) about when locker/desk/cubbie clean out will be, when ALL ITEMS MUST be back, I have a library book date and a textbook date. The more time between having to fill out lost slips and check in will help your sanity. The order in which I do inventory helps me to still be able to provide services until close to the end. Also, note: I am at two middle schools, and am in the middle of multiple Battle of the Book competitions and end-of-the-year projects. So some days inventory is only 1hour, some days it is 5-8 hours. Order: Extra textbooks Older Magazines (not the current one on the front shelves) Litsets Video Audio Reference Biography Nonfiction Easy Fiction Currently out materials I have set the checkin mode to Inventory Bookdrop. This way all the books that are coming in are inventoried and checked in at the same time. My system (Alexandria) does not care if an item is inventoried more than once. Also, just know, that I figure the end-of-the year is when I put in the most overtime. It is what the classroom teachers are doing also, so it is just part of the system. Don't book any HEAVY family/friend obligations so that you don't get over stressed. Remember the good things: talks with students, WHAT you HAVE accomplished. Do the nutritious food, water, exercise, sleep thing. And, summer is coming.
