Thanks for the replies. Here are the suggestions, along with an
additional title that I've identified also.

"Shabanu: Daughter of the wind by Suzanne Staples is one that is used a
lot...It is a great look into the life in the middle east, their values,
mores, and customs."

"Something with similar themes (and a bit easier read) is "Mutant
Message from Down Under" by Marlo Morgan. Mr. Quinn also wrote "My
Ishmael" which is a much better read for the teen-age crew than his
original. Barbara Kingsolver's "Poisonwood Bible" also explores some
similar themes and introduces a lot of new ones regarding the intrusion
of western religion on aboriginal cultures."

"Mickaelsen, Ben. Red Midnight
Taylor, Theodore. The Bomb
Marshall, James Vance. Still Waters (this is an older title)
Koller, Jackie. The Primrose Way (Native American/colonist interaction
in New England, but it fits your themes)"

Vargas, Llosa, "The Storyteller." ("The examination of the roles of
anthropologists and ecologists in preserving the integrity of native
societies is here explicit, and the good reader reaps the rewards of a
novel that tackles major political issues as it fulfills the basic human
need to tell and hear stories. A well-written work, demanding that we
think about the results of acculturation and ecological disaster." from
Library Journal)

Subject: TARGET: Novel for Secondary Social Studies

I'm looking for recommendations for a novel for junior Social Studies
classes to replace one they are currently using, "Ishmael," by Daniel
Quinn. The teachers are tired of teaching the book and want to find one
that explores similar themes and challenges students to "think outside
the box"...issues of globalization, questioning the Western way of life
and its impact on the world around us, examining our definition of what
constitutes progress. The goal is to stimulate students to look at
history and Western civilization in a different light.

Thanks for your suggestions.
