One of the reasons I do inventory is because we do not have a security
system, and students (and parents, teachers, staff, etc.) can
accidentally walk off with something. If no one looks for it between
then and the next year, how do I know what's missing and needs to be
reordered ASAP?

I also get the opportunity to look at the books and assess their
condition. Sometimes, books are used without being checked out and I
don't know that they're falling apart.

I can reshelve. I can recatalog. I can reacquaint myself with areas
of the collection that were not heavily used that year.

Is it a pain? Yes, it is. And perhaps it's not needed as often if
you have a small collection. But with 30,000+ volumes, it's nice to
really know what's there, what's not, and what should be.
